Why Study inBeijing? With so many cities in China, why it is important to study in Beijing? Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China, as well as the cultural, political and business centre. Historically, Beijing offers a glimpse into the past, whether you are visiting the Emperor's Palace or walking on the Great Wall. Combined with the comforts and convenience of a modern metropolis, Beijing offers an optimal environment to learn standard Mandarin Chinese (putonghua). It is important to learn standard Chinese as this is the language of business, academia and government. While there are many dialects in China, Mandarin is the official national language, understood by most Chinese people. Whether you wish to speak with local people, pursue scholarly reearch or embark on a career in China, standard Mandarin is a necessary tool for communication. Regional dialects are not suitable. Other major cities such
as Shanghai, Qingdao, Kunming, Guangzhou, Dalian and Nanjing offer Mandarin
language programs too. Unfortunately, it is difficult for students to utilize
their language skills in a practical environment, outside the classroom.
Often, local people use regional dialects or speak with a heavy local accent.
The language and accent used in Beijing is the same as you will recognize
from your language tapes and that used in the classroom. This is
the same accent heard on the radio and in movies and television.
The Beijing accent will seem very clear to Chinese language students.
